  • GLASGOW JEWISH REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
    The Council was founded in 1914 to speak on behalf of the Jewish Community of Glasgow
    and the West of Scotland. It fosters good relations between the Jewish Community and others,
    manages the Jewish Community Centre on behalf of the entire Community, and provides a
    democratic forum for the synagogues and the welfare, educational, social and cultural
    organisations in the Community. Its charitable arm is recognised by the Inland Revenue
    as a Charity, no. SCO 16626.

The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities is the representative body of all the Jewish communities in Scotland comprising Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee as well as the more loosely linked groups of the Jewish Network of Argyll and the Highlands, and of students studying in Scottish Universities and Colleges. It advances public understanding about the Jewish religion, culture and community and represents the Jewish community in Scotland to government and other statutory and official bodies, monitors the Scottish Parliament and liaises with MSPs and others on matters affecting the Jewish community. It also works in partnership with other organisations and stakeholders to promote good relations and understanding among community groups and to promote equality. The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities publishes a quarterly newsletter, 'Four Corners', for the smaller Scottish Jewish communities (available online at www.scojec.org ), organises current issues briefings for professionals in the Jewish community and is currently revising its information booklet on Jewish communities in Scotland.

The Jewish Community Centre is managed by the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council and houses the offices of the Representative Council, UJIA, the Jewish Learning Centre, the Israel Information Office, the Chaim Bermant Library , the UJIA Makor Resource Centre, the Student Chaplain, the Shaliach and the Youth Worker. It provides support facilities for all Jewish organisations and has meeting rooms available for hire.

Under the auspices of the Scottish Jewish Archives Committee, the Centre, based at Garnethill Synagogue, preserves, catalogues, and displays the records of the Jewish communities of Scotland. Regular public meetings are held and newsletters sent to all Friends of the Archives.
